GREEN BLUES

Green Blues was recorded as part of a Jazz Colloquy project by Johannes Hamm, and it was engineered by me and Farris. It took place on Friday December 17th, during the fall semester of 2021. Besides Green Blues there were six more songs recorded on that Friday, their names were Monday, Looking for the thing, My one and only, Nelly, Elegy and My shining hour. The instrumentation for the recording that took place was piano, tenor saxophone, trumpet, upright bass, electric guitar and drums. The recording took place at the James Dolan studio located in the Steinhardt education building.

Mic Set Up

For the piano we place a pair of DPA 4011s in a ORTF positioning above middle C inside the piano. Outside the piano, we put an AB pair of Josephson's C-617s three feet apart from each other and two feet from the piano pointing the lid to get those first reflections. The upright bass we had a EV RE-20 and a Coles 4038 pointing at the bridge to avoid the booming low end coming from the f-hole. Tenor saxophone had a Neuman U87 and a Coles 4038 in front of it pointing at the bell, while the trumpet only had a Royer 121 pointing at its bell. In the isolation booth we put a Royer 121 with a Shure SM57 right above it pointing at the same speaker of the amp, where the re-amping of the guitar was taking place. In addition to that the guitar was connected straight to the wall via a passive DI that recorded a clean guitar signal and had a DPA 4011 to capture some string details from the player.

Drums

Finally, the drum set had the following setup. For the kick, an EV RE-20 and a Neuman U87 were placed pointing at the drum and for the snare, two microphones were placed on top and bottom of the drum. On the top, we placed a Shure SM57, and on the bottom a Sennheiser 441. For the high-hat, a Neuman KM184 was placed as well. For the rack tom, a AKG 414 was positioned, and for the floor tom Sennheiser MD421. Finally, for overheads two Schoeps CMC6s were positioned above the drum kit, both at an equal distance from the snare drum.
