INFERNO

Inferno was recorded as part of a Jazz Colloquy project by Calvin Sexton, and it was engineered by me. It took place on Saturday, March 5th, during the spring semester of 2022. Besides Inferno there were four more songs recorded on that Saturday, their names were Up Tom Thumb, Freedom, Ain’t Nobody, Gotta move on, and Misty. The instrumentation for the recording session that took place was piano, saxophone, trombone, electric bass, and drums. The recording took place at the James Dolan studio located in the Steinhardt education building.

Mic Set Up

For the piano, a pair of Schoeps CMC-6s was placed diagonally above the piano 10cm each away from middle C. Outside the piano, an AB pair of Josephson's C-617s was placed three feet apart from each other and from the piano pointing the lid to get those first reflections. The Bass was positioned at the northeast corner of the live room using its DI plugged straight into the wall. The trombone in the research lab had a Coles 4038 pointing at its bell and the Saxophone in the isolation booth had two tube microphones pointing at its bell, a Neuman U67 and a Neuman M147.

Drums

Finally, the drum set had the following setup. For the kick, an AKG D112 was placed pointing at the drum and for the snare, two microphones were placed on top and bottom of the drum. On the top, we placed a Shure SM57, and on the bottom a Sennheiser MD 421. For the high-hat, a Sennheiser MD 421 was placed as well. For the rack tom, a Sennheiser 441 was placed, and for the floor tom a Sennheiser e602ii. Finally, for overheads, two Sennheiser 8050s were placed in a Glyn John’s positioning, one pointing towards the snare and one pointing towards the ride behind the right shoulder of the drummer. Both microphones were at an equal distance from the snare drum.
